Ferrero cuts emissions by 7.2% as sustainability report highlights traceable cocoa, renewable energy

Ferrero’s latest sustainability report highlights lower greenhouse gas emissions, renewable electricity adoption, improved ingredient traceability and progress toward recyclable packaging across its global operations.

Ferrero Group has reported a 7.2% reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the 2024/25 financial year, reflecting continued progress in its environmental sustainability strategy.

The confectionery company also announced that 24 of its manufacturing plants now operate using 100% renewable electricity sourced from the grid.

The achievements were outlined in the company’s 2024/25 Sustainability Report, which highlights progress across emissions reduction, responsible sourcing, packaging and supply chain traceability.

According to the report, Ferrero achieved high levels of traceability across its major agricultural ingredients. Cocoa reached 98% traceability to farm polygon maps, palm oil achieved 98.6% traceability to plantation level, hazelnuts reached 97% traceability to farmers, while coffee beans recorded 100% traceability to plantation polygon maps.

The company also reported that 99% of its cocoa was sourced through certification schemes or independently managed standards. In addition, all palm oil volumes were certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), while all coffee beans were certified under the Rainforest Alliance programme.

Commenting on the report, Giovanni Ferrero, President of Ferrero Group, said: “Ferrero’s long-term success remains closely linked to the wellbeing of the people and ecosystems on which our supply chain depends.”

He added: “Guided by our purpose and long-term vision, we will continue supporting initiatives related to the protection of natural resources, the support of our people, communities and partners and the creation of products that delight consumers for generations to come.”

The report also highlighted progress in sustainable packaging. Ferrero said 92.9% of its packaging is now designed to be recyclable, reusable or compostable, while 86.8% is recyclable, reusable or compostable in practice and at scale.

Packaging redesigns for Ferrero Rocher have reduced the plastic-to-product ratio by 14.7% compared with the 2019/20 baseline, preventing approximately 16,000 tonnes of plastic from being used since September 2021.

Ferrero also outlined progress under its Ferrero Farming Values framework, which focuses on supplier due diligence, certification, traceability, sustainable farming practices and collaboration throughout agricultural supply chains.

Chief Executive Officer Lapo Civiletti said: “Ferrero Farming Values translates our sustainability approach into concrete actions across the sourcing of our key ingredients.”

“It provides a structured framework to strengthen supplier accountability, improve traceability and certification, support farmers, and drive collaboration across the sector — while allowing us to adapt to the specific realities of each ingredient supply chain,” he added.
