Fresh Del Monte’s commitment to sustainability has earned it the SEAL Business Sustainability Award for the fourth time in five years.
COSTA RICA – Fresh Del Monte has been honored with the SEAL Business Sustainability Award 2025, reinforcing its strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainable business practices.
The award recognizes the company’s outstanding progress, especially in Costa Rica where many of its sustainability projects are based.
Fresh Del Monte’s work in Costa Rica has been central to its success. The company took early action by setting clear targets to lower greenhouse gas emissions through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
It committed to a 27.5% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 12.3% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030. Thanks to a focused approach, Fresh Del Monte met its Scope 1 and 2 targets seven years ahead of schedule.
In Costa Rica, the company switched to cleaner energy sources, installing solar panels at its facilities and modernizing machinery to improve energy efficiency. These changes helped reduce energy consumption from the national grid, while solar power now supports a range of farming and processing operations.
Fresh Del Monte also launched pilot projects using technology to carefully manage fertilizer use, ensuring crops get exactly what they need without harming the environment.
The company’s conservation projects have protected more than 8,000 hectares of forest. These efforts help local wildlife move safely through agricultural areas and maintain biodiversity. Reforestation and pollinator protection programs have strengthened the health of the farming landscape.
Fresh Del Monte’s farms in Costa Rica have earned certifications such as GLOBALG.A.P., showing adherence to the best farming practices.
One standout project, the Del Monte Zero™ Pineapple, achieved Carbon Neutral certification through SCS Global Services, thanks to carbon offsets from the protected forests.
Michael Calderón, spokesperson for Fresh Del Monte Costa Rica, emphasized the company’s long-term view. “At Fresh Del Monte, we understand that the future of the planet depends on the action we take today. We are committed to Costa Rica, not only in terms of efficiency and sustainability, but also in building a legacy for future generations,” he said.
