Kenyan avocado exports face a slow European campaign as Peru dominates

Exports to Asia remain strong, helping to offset difficulties in other regions.

KENYA – The Kenyan avocado season is progressing slowly in the European market due to strong competition from Peru and complicated logistics, even as demand for the Fuerte variety remains strong in Asia and the Middle East.

Miqdad Hassan Nandwa, CEO of Fawakih, a producer and exporter of exotic fruits, explained the divergent market dynamics.

We are able to export to the Middle East, China, India, and Turkey. The most in-demand variety in these markets is the Fuerte, in medium and small sizes. Demand is fairly good, and the season is going well in these markets,” said Nandwa.

However, in Europe, Kenyan exporters face stiff competition from Peruvian suppliers. “The season is slow in the European market because there are very large volumes coming from Peru. Here we are talking about Hass avocados.

For Kenyan exporters, leveraging Fuerte demand in emerging markets presents a clear strategy. While Hass avocados compete directly with Peruvian volumes in Europe, Fuerte varieties face less competition in Asia and the Middle East, where buyers actively seek medium and small sizes.

The impact of Red Sea disruptions on avocado logistics has been significant. Key shipping routes have been disrupted, driving up air freight costs and slowing trade cycles. Despite these hurdles, contract prices are roughly in line with last season, according to Nandwa, although open-market prices are lower.

Despite sluggish demand in the European market, prices for Kenyan avocados are holding steady thanks to strong local demand from processing mills. Processing plants convert fresh avocados into oil, puree, and frozen products, providing an alternative outlet when fresh export markets soften.

On the other hand, investors can capture value by expanding processing capacity, thereby reducing exposure to volatile fresh-fruit prices and extending shelf life for export.

The Kenyan avocado export season began amid challenging geopolitical and logistical conditions, but market diversification has helped offset regional sluggishness. Exports to Asia remain strong, helping to offset difficulties in other regions.

For business owners and investors, navigating fluctuating market dynamics may require targeting demand for Fuerte in emerging Asian and Middle Eastern markets, investing in processing capacity to absorb local volumes, and managing logistics costs by diversifying shipping routes.

As Peruvian supplies eventually taper off, Kenyan Hass avocados may regain momentum in Europe, but for now, Fuerte varieties and processing plants are providing critical stability.
