Known-You Seed launches super-mini watermelons with long shelf life

The small size aligns with individual consumption trends among urban consumers seeking convenience without sacrificing quality.

GLOBAL – Known-You Seed has introduced three new super-mini watermelon varieties developed specifically for the European market, responding to shifting consumer preferences toward smaller, better-tasting, round-shaped fruit.

The hybrids range from approximately 800 grams for micro-seeded types to 1.5 to 1.8 kilograms for seedless options, representing the smallest watermelon varieties currently available commercially.

Sandro Colombi, Known-You Seed’s Country Sales Manager, explained the strategic focus on quality oversize. “The trend is to have smaller watermelons that taste better and are round instead of elongated. Our selection includes both seeded and seedless options. Our company has invested the most in organoleptic quality because it would be pointless to have small watermelons if they weren’t tasty.”

For investors in Middle Eastern and African food, these super-mini watermelons offer significant market potential. More importantly, the small size aligns with individual consumption trends among urban consumers seeking convenience without sacrificing quality.

Colombi emphasized that taste alone is insufficient for market success. “They must create a memorable sensory experience that makes people want to buy them again. That’s why we waited until today to present this product. We wanted the best possible product, characterized by a high °Brix, distinct mouthfeel, and long shelf life.

On the other hand, the perfectly round shape of these watermelons offers unique packaging advantages. Colombi noted, “This may seem like a minor detail, but it adds value, especially when it comes to packaging options. They can be packaged like large apples, perhaps in alveoli.”

In addition, Brian Liang, deputy general manager of Known-You Seed Europe B.V., highlighted the agronomic strategy. “We focus on the most advanced innovations. These varieties are ideal for individual consumption and weigh between 0.8 and 1.8 kilograms. From an agronomic and convenience standpoint, the idea is to grow them vertically. We have several ongoing projects in this direction. It will be possible to grow them in greenhouses and supply the market year-round.

As a result, the combination of superior flavour, extended shelf life, round shape for protective packaging, and vertical greenhouse production creates a compelling value proposition.

As Known-You Seed advances its European market entry, Middle Eastern and African investors have an opportunity to introduce these super-mini watermelons to regional retailers, hotel chains, and food service operators seeking differentiated fruit products that align with convenience and quality trends.
