Nigeria, Türkiye explore joint livestock development opportunities
The partnership could open investment prospects across the livestock value chain.
NIGERIA – Nigeria and Türkiye are in talks to deepen cooperation to transform Nigeria’s livestock sector and attract investment along the industry’s value chain.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, revealed the discussions while meeting with a delegation from the Nigeria–Türkiye Business Council (NTBC) in Abuja, led by chairman Dele Kelvin Oye.
Maiha said the collaboration aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, which seeks to expand international partnerships to modernise critical sectors of Nigeria’s economy, including livestock.
He described the livestock sector as an area with wide-ranging investment opportunities, covering feed production, animal health services, ranching, dairy, meat processing, and cold-chain logistics.
The minister explained that cooperation with Türkiye could help Nigeria increase red meat output, improve livestock genetics, establish grazing reserves, and expand dairy production.
He added that other potential areas of collaboration include vaccine manufacturing and food processing, both of which are essential for building resilience in the livestock industry.
Maiha emphasised that Nigeria is open to partnerships with entities that can introduce technology, expertise, and investment to strengthen the sector.
Dele Kelvin Oye said Türkiye’s livestock sector offers practical approaches that could be applied to Nigeria’s reform initiatives.
Oye noted that Türkiye, despite facing its own agricultural challenges, has developed livestock systems that cover artificial insemination, advanced poultry management, feed production, equipment technology, leather processing, and pasture management.
He commended the Nigerian ministry for ongoing reforms in the sector and said the NTBC is prepared to connect Turkish investors with opportunities within Nigeria’s livestock value chain.
Oye indicated that Turkish expertise in genetics, feed manufacturing, and livestock technology could help Nigeria achieve efficiency improvements and increased production.
The discussions highlight both countries’ interest in strengthening trade and investment links, particularly in sectors that can contribute to food security and economic growth.
Maiha concluded that the livestock sector transformation is a priority for Nigeria, with government support available to investors ready to introduce innovative practices and technologies.
