Thermo Fisher launches first Orbitrap HRAM System for environmental, food safety testing

It provides comprehensive full-scan, high-resolution data from every sample, enabling retrospective analysis for newly identified compounds without the need to re-run tests.

USA – Thermo Fisher Scientific has unveiled the Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris EFOX Mass Detector, the world’s first high-resolution accurate mass (HRAM) Orbitrap system designed specifically for environmental and food safety laboratories.

The system directly addresses global challenges related to food and water contamination, including persistent pollutants such as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), pesticides, and other emerging contaminants.

The Orbitrap Exploris EFOX (Environmental and Food Organic Xenobiotics) Mass Detector combines high analytical precision with purpose-built workflows to help laboratories deliver faster, richer, and more compliant data.

By enabling more efficient contaminant detection, it supports early public health risk assessment and better regulatory compliance in an era of growing environmental scrutiny.

Unlike conventional high-resolution mass spectrometry platforms, often research-oriented systems adapted for routine testing, the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX is purpose-built for everyday laboratory workflows.

It delivers research-grade performance in a compact, intuitive format, allowing laboratories to detect trace contaminants such as PFAS at extremely low concentrations.

With simplified setup and guided operation, the system allows scientists to move from sample to result in minutes without compromising data quality or throughput.

Lidija Raicevic, Vice President and Environmental and Food Safety Lead at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said the innovation reflects the company’s commitment to helping labs meet rising expectations for speed and accuracy under tighter budgets.

“Offering an easy-to-use high-resolution mass detector helps ensure more labs can conduct critical full-scan, accurate mass monitoring, expand local testing, and ultimately accelerate quality controls to make our environment and food safer,” she said.

The Orbitrap Exploris EFOX provides comprehensive full-scan, high-resolution data from every sample, enabling retrospective analysis for newly identified compounds without the need to re-run tests.

This capability not only saves time and resources but also helps laboratories stay ahead of evolving regulatory standards.

Built-in workflows for key contaminants reduce the need for lengthy method development, streamlining validation and improving cost efficiency.

The system integrates seamlessly with the Chromeleon Chromatography Data System (CDS), featuring an intuitive interface for simplified data processing, reporting, and compliance documentation.

When paired with the Thermo Scientific Vanquish dual-channel UHPLC, the solution delivers enhanced flexibility, productivity, and robustness for large-scale food and environmental testing operations.

Thermo Fisher also reaffirmed its commitment to triple quadrupole technology with the introduction of the TSQ Altis Plus EFOX MS, an optimized mass spectrometer for environmental and food applications.

Together, these instruments expand Thermo Fisher’s portfolio of analytical solutions designed to protect global food safety and environmental quality.
