Ukraine’s egg exports surge, driving domestic prices higher and raising UK concerns

Ukraine’s egg exports have grown rapidly, particularly to the UK, affecting domestic prices and trade dynamics.

UKRAINE – Ukraine’s egg industry has seen a sharp increase in exports over the first eight months of 2025, with shipments reaching approximately 1.4 billion eggs, up 82% from the same period last year.

The rise in exports coincides with a seasonal slowdown in production during autumn and winter, which has combined with strong foreign demand to push wholesale prices in Ukraine up by around 20% in the past three months.

As more eggs are sent abroad, fewer remain available for local consumption, and Ukrainian shoppers have experienced retail prices almost 50% higher than last year, according to official statistics.

The UK has become one of Ukraine’s leading buyers, importing close to 8 million kilograms of eggs in the first seven months of 2025, surpassing imports from Poland and Spain.

This growing reliance on Ukrainian eggs reflects changes in how British retailers and food manufacturers source products to meet consumer demand and maintain supply chains.

Domestic egg producers in the UK have raised objections, arguing that Ukrainian farms still use battery cages, a practice banned in the UK since 2012, which allows for lower production costs abroad.

Critics claim this creates an uneven market for British farmers who must comply with higher welfare standards, while questions have also emerged about varying food safety measures among international suppliers.

The UK government faces the challenge of balancing trade openness with policies that protect domestic farmers and ensure consistent standards for food safety and animal welfare.

Across the Atlantic, the United States has also increased imports of eggs due to local supply shortages, with recent shell egg shipments primarily coming from Turkey and processed egg products from Canada, Lithuania, and the Netherlands under strict inspection rules.
