Univar Solutions opens innovation center in Germany to accelerate European food development
The kitchen supports a broad range of applications, from bakery, dairy, and confectionery to prepared foods, plant-based proteins, and meat alternatives.
GERMANY – Univar Solutions LLC, a global distributor of specialty chemicals and ingredients, has unveiled its Foodology by Univar Solutions kitchen at the company’s Solution Center in Essen, Germany.
The launch marks a major investment in food and beverage innovation across Europe, providing an environment where science, creativity, and culinary expertise converge to shape the future of sustainable and nutritious food development.
Covering over 120 square meters, the new facility combines a bakery, R&D laboratory, workshop area, and showroom to serve as a hub for rapid formulation and testing.
The kitchen supports a broad range of applications, from bakery, dairy, and confectionery to prepared foods, plant-based proteins, and meat alternatives.
Its strategic location in Essen positions it at the heart of Europe’s logistics network, offering easy access for collaboration with customers and suppliers throughout the region.
Rob Whitney, Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at Univar Solutions, emphasized the kitchen’s collaborative purpose: “Our new test kitchen is a space where science, creativity, and industry expertise interconnect. We work alongside our customers to develop ingredient solutions that are practical and meet the needs of today’s consumers.”
The facility is designed to help manufacturers address complex formulation challenges, whether achieving clean-label, plant-based, or fortified recipes; enhancing texture and flavor in reduced-sugar or reduced-fat products; or maintaining indulgence while improving nutritional value.
Aaron Lee, Global Vice President of Health & Nutrition, noted that the timing of the investment aligns with changing consumer expectations across Europe.
“There is much opportunity for innovation now in the European market as demand for clean label products, plant-based proteins, and sustainable, upcycled food solutions continues to rise,” he said. “This kitchen will help us and our customers create groundbreaking products that are not only delicious, but also healthy, nutritious, and sustainable.”
