SAUDI ARABIA – Saudi Arabia and Syria have formalized four strategic agreements aimed at modernizing their transportation and logistics infrastructure, as the two nations move to facilitate smoother trade between them and enhance regional connectivity through cooperation in roads, railways, postal services, and aviation.
Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Saleh Al-Jasser and his Syrian counterpart, Ya’rub Badr, signed the agreements at a ceremony in Damascus on August 27, 2026.
The agreements comprise two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on cooperation in transport and logistics, particularly in the railway and land transport sectors.
The MoUs aim to build capacity, exchange expertise, and conduct technical studies to support the rehabilitation of Syrian roads and railway networks and the revitalization of transport and trade across Syrian territory.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
The signing followed a meeting between the two ministers, during which they discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in transportation and logistics, expand trade, and facilitate the movement of goods between the two countries.
Minister Al-Jasser emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and partnership with Syria and advancing relations between the two countries at the highest possible pace.
Syria’s Commitment to Reconstruction and Regional Integration
For his part, Minister Badr affirmed that the Saudi delegation’s visit comes amid economic and commercial developments in Syria, opening broader horizons for partnership between the two sides.
For instance, he commended the measures the Kingdom has taken to facilitate visa issuance for truck drivers, thereby supporting trade movement in both directions.
Badr expressed Syria’s aspiration to strengthen cooperation with the Kingdom across various transport and logistics sectors, particularly in developing land transport and railway networks and benefiting from the Kingdom’s advanced expertise and experience.
These accords focus on enhancing railway networks, road safety, aviation, and postal services to facilitate smoother trade between the two nations.
Moreover, by sharing technical expertise and conducting joint studies, the partnership seeks to rehabilitate Syrian transit routes while leveraging Saudi Arabia’s advanced logistical experience.
Overall, this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to economic reconstruction and the strengthening of diplomatic ties through improved regional connectivity
