Mission Produce completes Calavo acquisition, expands avocado platform into prepared foods

Mission expects to deliver a more comprehensive end-to-end service with greater supply, reliability and flexibility.

UNITED STATES – Mission Produce has completed its acquisition of Calavo Growers, uniting two of North America’s most established avocado companies and strengthening its vertically integrated global network by expanding its sourcing, packing, and prepared foods capabilities.

The acquisition transforms Mission’s global supply chain position by enhancing sourcing and packing capabilities, improving asset utilization across the network, and broadening its reach across complementary fresh produce categories.

Consequently, Mission expects to deliver a more comprehensive end-to-end service with greater supply, reliability and flexibility.

Mission’s vertically integrated platform, combined with Calavo’s sourcing capabilities, value-added offerings, and deep customer relationships, gives us the scale and operational foundation to deliver greater value across the supply chain,” said John Pawlowski, Mission Produce CEO.

Through Calavo, Mission is entering new product categories, including tomatoes, papayas, and value-added prepared foods such as guacamole. The prepared foods segment is described as high-margin and high-growth, marking a strategic shift beyond fresh avocado sales.

By absorbing Calavo as a wholly owned subsidiary, Mission intends to improve supply chain reliability and operational efficiency across North America while fostering innovation for shareholders and customers.

With the transaction complete, Calavo is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Mission. B. John Lindeman, former president and CEO of Calavo, will continue to lead the Calavo business during the transition period and will report to Pawlowski.

For more than a century, Calavo has built its business on trusted relationships with our growers, customers, and communities across North America,” said Lindeman. “By joining Mission, our team has access to a world-class global network, strengthening our ability to serve our partners with greater reach, reliability, and innovation.”

This merger signals continued consolidation in the global avocado industry, which could affect pricing and supply dynamics for international buyers. African avocado exporters may face intensified competition from North American suppliers with greater vertical integration.

However, the merger also creates potential partnership opportunities for MEA producers seeking reliable access to Mission’s expanded distribution network.

The prepared-food angle is particularly strategic, as value-added products command higher margins and are less sensitive to fluctuations in fresh-fruit prices.

For fresh producers seeking to move up the value chain, Calavo’s prepared foods business offers a potential model for diversification and long-term growth.
