Morocoo’s Zalar Holding expands from poultry to agribusiness operations

Merger with fruit producer forms part of diversification strategy*

MOROCCO – Morocco’s Zalar Holding is expanding its agricultural operations through new investments and acquisitions, pursuing growth opportunities beyond its core poultry business and seeking a larger role in the country’s agribusiness sector.

The group, which is one of Morocco’s largest poultry producers, has built its business around a fully integrated operating model that covers multiple stages of the poultry supply chain, including grain imports and trading, animal feed production, hatchery operations, poultry farming, meat processing, and the distribution of poultry products across domestic markets.

As part of its latest expansion efforts, the company has completed the integration of Zalar Farms with Africulture, a fruit production business focused on high-value crops, creating a broader agricultural platform that extends beyond livestock and poultry activities.

The transaction marks a shift in the company’s business approach as it looks to increase its presence in additional agricultural segments while creating new opportunities in both local and international markets.

Diversification Strategy

Industry observers say the move reflects a growing trend among agribusiness companies to diversify revenue sources and reduce exposure to fluctuations affecting individual agricultural sectors.

By combining poultry production with fruit cultivation and other farming activities, Zalar Holding seeks to expand its operations across diverse agricultural markets while responding to evolving consumer preferences and demand patterns.

The company’s strategy also comes at a time when Morocco is encouraging greater agricultural modernisation and aiming to increase the contribution of value-added products to export earnings.

Expansion Plans

Investment continues to play a central role in the group’s development plans, with financing arrangements and strategic partnerships expected to support the construction of additional facilities, the adoption of advanced farming systems, and the expansion of logistics infrastructure.

Previous funding support enabled the company to increase grain storage capacity, establish breeder farms, expand hatchery operations, and upgrade poultry production sites located near major consumption centres across Morocco.

Those projects have contributed to operational improvements while creating employment opportunities across the regions where the company operates production facilities.

Meanwhile, Zalar Holding is also exploring opportunities outside Morocco as it targets growth in other African markets by leveraging its expertise in poultry farming, animal nutrition, feed manufacturing, and agricultural supply chains.

The expansion plans come as food demand continues to rise across many African countries, prompting agribusiness companies to increase production capacity and invest in wider agricultural operations that support food supply and economic activity across the region.
