Peru blueberry exports surge 74% as US, Europe displace China from top market spot

The industry is experiencing robust growth, with total production expected to reach a record 404,000 metric tons.

PERU – Peru’s blueberry exports have surged 74% to 53,465 metric tons as of week 32 of the 2026/27 season, with the United States and Europe displacing China from its top market position.

The United States and Europe currently account for around 68% of Peru’s blueberry shipments, up from approximately 52% in the same period of the 2025/26 season.

China, however, has seen the opposite trend. Its share has fallen from about one-third a year ago to just 15%.

As of week 32, Peru had exported 7,827 metric tons of blueberries to China, a 20% decrease from the same period in 2025/26.

The major shifts in Peru’s global blueberry distribution show the United States increasing its share to 43% of total exports, up 138%. Europe’s share increased to 25%, up 108%.

China has slipped to third place, behind the U.S. and European markets. Nearly nine out of every ten additional metric tons of blueberries Peru exported went to Western markets.

Peru’s fresh blueberry exports for the 2026/27 season are projected to reach about 404,000 metric tons, up 5.6% on the previous season.

Export volumes are expected to peak in week 43 at around 19,750 metric tons. Compared with the 20,940 metric tons shipped in week 40 of the previous season, this season’s peak is expected to occur three weeks later and at a lower level.

China’s market share is declining as Western markets grow, though the report does not explain why. The decrease in shipments to China cannot be attributed solely to weaker demand or structural changes in the Chinese market.

During the same period last season, China was roughly on a par with the United States as Peru’s top export destination. This season, however, China has slipped to third place.

Meanwhile, the industry is experiencing robust growth, with total production expected to reach a record 404,000 metric tons. The peak shipping window is projected to arrive later and be slightly less intense than last year.

Finally, whether exports to China can return to peak-season levels in the coming weeks remains to be seen. The underlying reasons for the shift in trade routes remain unclear, making it difficult to predict whether this represents a permanent or temporary change in market dynamics.
