TransFRESH acquires Hazel Technologies to boost berry shelf life with Breatheway membrane tech
This acquisition signals that major industry players are investing heavily in post-harvest technology to differentiate their offerings.
UNITED STATES – TransFRESH Corporation, a subsidiary of Chiquita Holdings Limited, has acquired Hazel Technologies, a globally recognized innovator in post-harvest freshness preservation, integrating its proprietary Breatheway® membrane technology into TransFRESH’s Tectrol® pallet bag capabilities for the berry industry.
The acquisition marks a significant investment in next-generation post-harvest technology. To begin with, Breatheway membrane technology dynamically adjusts package breathability in response to temperature fluctuations during transit, precisely regulating oxygen and carbon dioxide levels within packaging environments.
As a result, the system maintains product integrity, extends freshness, and reduces food waste throughout storage and distribution.

While the immediate focus remains on berries, the merger offers strategic advantages for tropical fruits, including bananas, and benefits the broader Chiquita Holdings organization. The technology is particularly well-suited to long-term banana storage and ripening management.
