The new production line increases SunOpta’s network capacity while expanding packaging capabilities for plant-based beverages, tea and broths at its Midlothian facility.

USA – SunOpta has opened a fourth production line at its beverage manufacturing facility in Midlothian, Texas, following a $35 million investment to meet growing customer demand.
The expansion is expected to increase SunOpta’s network capacity by 10% while bringing production closer to distribution locations serving its customers. The facility produces plant-based milks and creamers, tea and broths for foodservice, retail and e-commerce channels.
“Demand for plant-based milks and creamers, tea and broths in various formats is increasing, and the Midlothian expansion positions us to meet that momentum head-on,” said Brian Kocher, CEO of SunOpta.
“By investing in our existing footprint and capabilities, we’re strengthening our ability to support customers with the scale, flexibility and reliability they need today and well into the future,” Kocher added.
SunOpta opened the Midlothian plant in winter 2023 as part of its plans to expand beverage manufacturing capacity in Texas. The original 285,000-square-foot facility was designed to accommodate expansion to 400,000 square feet and support multiple package sizes and configurations.
The new production line will increase capacity for existing customers while allowing SunOpta to take on additional business. It supports 16-ounce, 32-ounce and 330-millilitre packages, as well as 32-ounce “Edge” packaging and half-gallon formats.
The facility was also designed around SunOpta’s sustainability objectives. Its water reuse equipment can save up to 20 million gallons annually, while its energy-efficient HVAC system reduces energy consumption by 45%. LED lighting and water heaters reduce power usage by 95%, while offices and laboratories were constructed using at least 40% recyclable materials.
SunOpta, now part of Refresco, operates seven manufacturing facilities across six markets and employs more than 220 people at its Midlothian site.
“At Midlothian, we take pride in turning growth opportunities into results,” said Plant Director Nick Muzzin. “This expansion reflects the dedication of our team and our ability to deliver high-quality plant-based milks and creamers, tea and broths at scale.”
The company said the expansion will support customers as they grow and broaden access to its beverage manufacturing capabilities.
